Project Underway

Since our project launch at the end of September we have been very busy with getting the research phase underway.  We have a group of about 8 keen volunteer researchers including 3 who were involved in the earlier Birmingham Children of War project.

The volunteers have also been fortunate to be able to have had an afternoon of training on Archives and Research Skills with Corinna Rayner, Birmingham Archives Manager and a tour of the Heritage Research Area of the Library of Birmingham with Librarian Paul Taylor.  And last week they were introduced to the use of newspapers in local history research with project co-ordinator, Liz Palmer.

Each volunteer is looking at a different theme including midwives, health visitors, infant welfare centres, health and mortality of infants and mothers, and illegitimacy.  In the coming weeks you will be able to read about some of their initial findings as they share them via this blog.

Project Launch in Birmingham Heritage Week

Saturday 21st September

1.30-3.30pm

Wolfson Centre for Archival Research, Level 4, Library of Birmingham

Join us for the official launch of the Born in Birmingham project during Birmingham Heritage Week. Our pop-up exhibition will feature a selection of material that we have already identified that sheds light on issues such as: birth rates, infant mortality, welfare centres, role of midwives and even health visitors wages.

Project co-ordinator, Liz Palmer, and project administrator, Anne Hornsby, together with FoBAH committee members will be on hand to talk about the project and opportunities to get involved.

As with our earlier Birmingham Children of War project we are looking for people to get involved with research at the archives, writing blog articles and summaries for a publication and exhibition, and helping with events and social media.
Whatever your specific interests and skill levels we can find a role for you!
We’ll be having regular archive sessions on Tuesday afternoons – but there are also opportunities to do independent research at other times.
If you are interested in learning more or getting involved please try and come along to the launch on 21st September or drop us an email at borninbrum1914@gmail.com
